Miami University founded the Calvin S. Brice Society to recognize the generous gifts provided by alumni and friends to support the future of the university through planned gifts.
Miami University may not exist today without the help of Calvin S. Brice: Civil War veteran, railroad magnate, US senator, and Class of 1863 alumnus.
In 1885, Brice came to Miami’s aid after it had been closed for 12 years due to inadequate support. He saw an opportunity to invest in the future by providing much needed funds to pay off the university’s debt incurred during the Civil War. His dedication and generosity helped build today’s Miami.
